I feel a deep closeness to the rocks along the shore at Gwithian, West Cornwall and after taking hundreds of photos, felt compelled to paint them. There’s a wonderful feeling of intimacy as the finished painting seems to reveal itself. Even though I create the texture and build up several layers of paint, I have no idea of the gems and patterns to grow out of each piece of work. It thrills and delights me as though they were alive.
Gwithian Rocks is showing at The Penwith Gallery in St.Ives from 4th August until 3rd September 2016.
Earlier work can be seen in the website gallery including paintings that correspond to songs from my albums –
‘That Girl’ ‘Sunlight On My Soul’ and ‘Tiny Spark’.
Inspiration for the ‘That Girl’ set of paintings came while meditating on the flame of a candle. When the song finished I closed my eyes and observed the quickly changing colours and sketched what I saw.
The ‘Sunlight On My Soul’ paintings have a few lyrics from each song scratched into the paint or written in string. These images are like snapshots from that segment of my life.
Over the summer of 2014 as I completed the finishing touches to writing and recording the songs for my new album ‘Tiny Spark’ I began visualising the paintings to go with them. I spent a lot of time listening to the songs, sat along the Cornish coast, looking out to sea. Ideas for the paintings came while observing the changing imprint left behind after watching the sun and closing my eyes.
