Third album sparks new beginnings Singer Stephanie’s back after nine-year absence POSITIVE: Stephanie Kirkham’s new album is released tomorrow By JOHN ANSON GOOD things are worth waiting for, the saying goes — and that is certainly true about the new album, which will be released tomorrow, from Ribble Valley singer/songwriter Stephanie Kirkham. Tiny Spark is Stephanie’s third album but comes some nine years after her second — the critically acclaimed Sunlight On My Soul. For Stephanie, Tiny Spark marks a new beginning. She had signed to a five-album deal to the Hut record label which then folded. “That was a total shock,” said Stephanie. “I had never been part of a band. The musicians I worked with on the first album, That Girl, were really nice but when the label folded they just moved on to the next thing and I did feel alone.” Stephanie released Sunlight On My Soul independently as a response to the label closing but admits she was affected by the whole experience. “I was down for quite a while,” she said, “and I needed time to stop and think about what to do next.” One person who always believed in her was Grammy Award- winning producer Phil Thornalley, the man behind […]
West Briton Tue 19 Jan 2016 LeeTrewhela CORNWALL-BASED singer Stephanie Kirkham releases her third album this week – a record that every GP in the land should prescribe for happiness. Tiny Spark – produced by and co-written with Grammy Award-winning Phil Thornalley (Natalie Imbruglia, who had a massive hit with his song Torn, Pixie Lott, Bryan Adams, Thompson Twin and one-time member of The Cure) – is a joyous collection of instantly memorable songs. In fact so catchy and upbeat is it that one of the album’s (many) standout tracks, Easy As 123, has been featured on European TV campaigns for both EDF and Peugeot. It’s the sort of record that should find a home on daytime Radio 2 with Stephanie’s hugely likeable, breathy vocals, singalong choruses, almost tribal rhythms and sweet ukulele riffs shining on the likes of Best Time Ever and the natural Prozac stomper Future Come On. Stephanie, originally from Lancashire, told me: “Because no one was saying, ‘you’ve got to have an album out’ and we all got together when we felt like it led to the happy essence of the album. “I had such a good time working with Phil; we were just working on the […]
R2 Magazine Tiny Spark ***** (SLK) www.stephaniekirkham.com It’s a decade since Stephanie Kirkham’s last album hit the shelves. That was a dark affair, reflecting the turbulent route her career had taken to that point. Ten years later she is in a happier place and Tiny Spark reflects that in no uncertain terms. In ‘If I Could’ she states that ‘ …baby, I’d bottle it…’ and that is pretty much what she’s done; distilled the essence of a smile and turned it into musical form. All this resolute cheerfulness could become rather saccharine in lesser hands. However, across the thirteen songs on Tiny Spark the mood stays just the right side of the line that separates quirky from twee. The production remains open and organic while thrown in are all manner of sounds from ukulele to glockenspiel, from toy piano to doo-wop and music-hall vocals. The deftness with which this is done is thanks to co-writer and producer, Phil Thornalley, no stranger to crafting likeable songs that bury themselves into the consciousness. However, the jewel that shines most brightly in each song is Kirkham’s voice. A beautiful mixture of natural Lancashire pronunciation, innocence and intimacy, there is an honesty and integrity […]
